Making a Parenting Plan in England
A clear plan can reduce last-minute messages and misunderstandings. Here is what a parenting plan can cover in England, and how it differs from a court order.

Keep the first version manageable
A plan can start with the arrangements your child needs this week. It can then cover holidays and less frequent decisions. Joint planning needs to be safe for everyone involved.
A practical checklist
- Where your child stays on school nights and weekends.
- Who collects them, where and at what time.
- How school and health information is shared.
- How your child stays in touch between visits.
- What happens during holidays, illness or changed plans.
- When you will review the plan.
Does signing make it legally binding?
A private parenting plan is not legally binding just because both parents sign it. A mediator can help you agree, but mediation does not itself turn the plan into an order.
A consent order is an agreement approved by a court. The judge checks whether it is suitable for the child before deciding whether to approve it.
If there is already a court order
A private plan does not formally change an existing order. GOV.UK explains how to ask the court to change an order or deal with it not being followed.
A parenting plan also does not automatically settle child maintenance or divorce finances. Those arrangements need their own attention.
