Making a Parenting Plan in Canada
A parenting plan puts the everyday arrangements in one place. For families in Canada, a useful plan explains both the weekly routine and how bigger decisions will be made.

What to include
- School days, weekends and holidays.
- Handovers and travel.
- Important decisions about school, health and other needs.
- How necessary information is shared.
- Contact between stays.
- How the plan will be reviewed as the child grows.
Make the wording practical
Decision-making responsibility means responsibility for major choices. Everyday decisions during parenting time are a different matter. Clear wording helps avoid treating every meal or activity as a dispute about legal authority.
The Department of Justice parenting-plan resource gives examples of topics to discuss.
Does the plan become a court order?
Under the Divorce Act, an agreed plan is included in the parenting order unless it would not be in the child’s best interests. A document in a notebook or app does not itself become an order.
For other separation cases, provincial or territorial rules govern the agreement’s legal effect and the steps for court approval or enforcement.
When circumstances change
An existing court order may need a formal change, often called a variation. Maintenance and property also have their own rules; a schedule does not settle them automatically.
Joint planning should not require unsafe communication. Violence or intimidation may make mediation and direct negotiation inappropriate.
